Cameroon’s agribusiness sector: A goldmine of opportunities for African entrepreneurs

Cameroon, nicknamed ‘Africa in miniature’, is now positioning itself as a prime destination for investment in the agro-industrial sector. With 23 million hectares of arable land, favourable climatic conditions and a strategic geographical location, the country offers exceptional opportunities for visionary entrepreneurs.

Untapped agro-industrial potential

Agriculture accounts for around 16% of Cameroon’s GDP and employs nearly 70% of the working population. However, the sector remains largely under-exploited. The main promising sectors include cocoa (4th largest producer worldwide), coffee, palm oil, cotton, tropical fruits and livestock farming. These sectors offer immense opportunities for local processing, value creation and export.

Investment opportunities are particularly concentrated in agricultural product processing, mechanisation, post-harvest technologies, cold chains and the development of modern processing facilities. The Cameroonian government actively encourages these investments through tax incentives and dedicated support programmes.

Support from the African Entrepreneurs Association (AAE)

Given these opportunities, the African Entrepreneurs Association (AAE) is positioning itself as a strategic partner for entrepreneurs wishing to invest in Cameroon’s agribusiness sector. Drawing on its expertise and pan-African network, the AAE offers tailored support to project leaders.

The AAE’s training programmes cover all the essential aspects of agro-industrial entrepreneurship: market research, business planning, financial management, production techniques, quality standards and marketing strategies. Personalised mentoring allows entrepreneurs to benefit from the advice of experienced sector experts.

‘Our members have access to a comprehensive support ecosystem, from the initial idea to the scaling up of their business,’ explains an AAE official. The programmes also include networking sessions to facilitate strategic partnerships and access to financing.

Inspiring success stories

Several entrepreneurs supported by the AAE have already transformed Cameroon’s agro-industrial landscape. From cocoa processing units to modern aquaculture farms and digital agricultural marketing platforms, these successes demonstrate the sector’s potential.

These initiatives create local jobs, strengthen food security and contribute to national exports. They perfectly illustrate the AAE’s mission: to promote sustainable and inclusive entrepreneurship, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, in particular SDG 8.3, which encourages the creation of productive enterprises.

Seizing tomorrow’s opportunities

Cameroon’s agribusiness sector is on the cusp of a revolution. New technologies, precision farming, blockchain for traceability, and artificial intelligence are opening up unprecedented opportunities. Entrepreneurs who position themselves today will enjoy a decisive competitive advantage.

The AAE is supporting this transformation by constantly adapting its programmes to market developments. Its holistic approach, combining technical training, strategic mentoring and networking, maximises the chances of success for entrepreneurial projects.

The future of African agribusiness is taking shape in Cameroon. It is up to today’s entrepreneurs to write its history.

I have over 10 years' experience in the humanitarian sector. I work in project management, monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning (SERA/MEAL), and volunteer training. I'm very interested in Protection/Gender - Peacebuilding - food security and livelihoods - Nexus HDP. I have contributed to several evaluation missions and project/programs studies with organisations in the United Nations system (WFP, UNICEF, UNHCR, UNV); international organisations (FHI 360, ACF, NRC, HI, DRC, CRF, International Alert, SFCG). I have coordinated several projects and activities with national organisations (ARDHU, ASPDE, ALPHADEV, UJAD, ACE COP MONDE). Working to cover the basic needs of civilian victims who have been endangered, marginalised or excluded by the effects of natural disasters, wars and situations of economic collapse, is for me a way of making a significant contribution to the achievement of the organisation's missions.
