Creating a meaningful and authentic Mission for organization in Africa

A well-crafted mission statement is essential for any organization that wants to achieve its goals and aspirations. This is particularly true in Africa, where dynamic markets and growing entrepreneurship demand clarity of purpose. A famous Saying by Lewis Carroll, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.” Mission statement serves as a guiding light for employees, helping them to understand what the organization is all about and what they are working towards. Take, for example, M-Pesa, Africa’s leading mobile money service. Its mission is “to empower individuals and businesses by providing accessible financial solutions.” This mission is clear, concise, and deeply rooted in the African context, where financial inclusion remains a critical challenge. Similarly, Jumia, often called the “Amazon of Africa,” aligns its mission with local needs: “To improve everyday lives in Africa by leveraging technology.” These mission statements are not only aspirational but also actionable, providing a roadmap for employees to drive impact in their communities. A good mission statement is also important for attracting and retaining top talent. Employees want to work for organizations that have a clear purpose and that they can be proud of. Dangote Group, one of Africa’s largest conglomerates, exemplifies this with its mission: “To touch the lives of millions by providing their basic needs.” This resonates deeply in a region where access to essentials like food, cement, and energy is transformative. Peter Drucker emphasis that, “A mission statement is not just a slogan or a marketing tagline. It is a fundamental statement of what the organization stands for and what it hopes to achieve.”

African SMEs, this is especially significant, a small business in Nairobi or Lagos can draw inspiration from Ecobank’s mission: “To contribute to the economic development and financial integration of Africa.” Such statements foster unity and motivation among employees, driving them to excel. Despite the importance of a mission statement, many African leaders struggle to articulate an appropriate and inspiring one. This is often due to a lack of guidance concerning the focus, scope, and form of expression they should aim for. According to ‘Jim Collins’, “A mission statement is a declaration of an organization’s purpose. It should be clear, concise, and inspiring. It should also be actionable, providing guidance for employees on how to achieve the organization’s goals.” To help leaders craft the best mission statement for their specific situation a good mission statement should be:

  • Clear and concise: It should be easy to understand and remember.
  • Authentic: It should reflect the organization’s core values and beliefs.
  • Aspirational: It should inspire employees to achieve their full potential.
  • Actionable: It should provide guidance for employees on how to achieve the organization’s goals.

Human-centered design philosophy would be used to create a mission statement that is meaningful, authentic, and actionable. For instance, a cooperative in Ghana might engage local farmers to create a mission like “To sustainably uplift smallholder farmers through fair trade and innovation. Human-centered philosophy emphasizes the importance of understanding and meeting the needs of the people who use an organization’s products or services. It also emphasizes the importance of creating a positive and meaningful experience for users. To create a meaningful and authentic mission statement using human-centered design philosophy, an organization should:

  • Involve stakeholders in the process. This includes customers, employees, and the community.
  • Conduct user research. This will help to understand the needs and wants of users.
  • Use iterative design principles. This means testing and refining the mission statement with stakeholders before it finalized.
  • Be responsive to feedback. The organization should be willing to revise the mission statement based on feedback from stakeholders.

These mission statements are all clear, concise, and aspirational. They also provide guidance for employees on how to achieve the organization’s goals. A meaningful and authentic mission statement is essential for any organization that wants to be successful. Human-centered design philosophy can be used to create a mission statement that is meaningful, authentic, and actionable. By involving stakeholders, conducting user research, using iterative design principles, and being responsive to feedback, organizations can create a mission statement that will guide them to success. In addition to the above, here are some additional points on creating a meaningful and authentic mission statement:

  • Be honest with yourself. What are the organization’s true goals and values? What are its strengths and weaknesses? It is important to be honest about these things in order to create a mission statement that is authentic and achievable.
  • Be specific. The mission statement should be specific enough to provide guidance for employees, but not so specific that it limits the organization’s flexibility.
  • Be inspiring. The mission statement should be something that employees can get behind and be proud of. It should inspire them to do their best work.

Creating a meaningful and authentic mission statement is an important investment for any organization, specifically for African businesses, it’s an opportunity to align global best practices with local realities. It takes time and effort, but it is worth it in the long-run.
