The Importance of Training and Skills Development for SMEs in Cote D’ivoire in the Context of Digital Transformation

As one of the pioneers of computing, Douglas Engelbart, put it, “the digital revolution is far more significant than the invention of writing or even printing”. Just as the 20th century was marked by globalization, the 21st century is witnessing real changes in business practices and social behavior, stemming from a single source: the digitization of society. Digitization represents a new opportunity for companies looking to boost their performance and remain competitive in an increasingly competitive market. In Côte d’Ivoire, over 71.1% of SMEs are growing every year, in a changing economic climate. However, many small and medium-sized businesses fail to appreciate the importance of training and mastery of new technologies in the development of their business activities. Moreover, digitization offers significant opportunities to improve operational efficiency extend market reach and create new business models. However, for SMEs to take full advantage of these benefits, it is important that they invest in training and skills development for their employees.  The aim of this study, in the face of this organizational and societal problem, is to show the importance of training in the context of digital transformation, emphasizing that the success of SMEs depends on their ability to adapt to digital technologies and introduce innovations.

THE CHALLENGES OF DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION FOR SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED BUSINESSES

Digital transformation is a major challenge for many SMEs in Côte d’Ivoire, who face obstacles such as a lack of financial resources. Many are unable to invest in advanced technologies or employee training, which limits their ability to adopt these new resolutions. Indeed, resistance to change is a common problem, particularly in contexts where traditional practices are well entrenched. Employees may fear that the introduction of technology will interfere with their work, or that they won’t be able to master new tools. Going a step further, ITED (Computerization of Companies), 2022 in its publication mentions 7 major challenges faced by all companies, including: « lack of digital knowledge and skills, financial resources, human resources and time… difficulties in implementing new technologies and integrating with existing systems ».

These challenges are clearly illustrated by the example of local SMEs who are reluctant to embrace e-commerce.

LARGE-SCALE TRAINING AND SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

To overcome these realities, employee training and skills development are crucial. By investing in training programs, SMEs can not only improve their employees’ skills, but also boost their confidence in new technologies. Training can take many forms, such as online courses, hands-on workshops or coaching sessions. Initiatives such as the Ivorian government’s digital training program have familiarized many companies with digital tools. What’s more, ongoing training is crucial if employees are to keep abreast of the latest trends and technologies, which is important in an ever-changing world.
Anselme Akeko in his publication pull from CIO.MAG ONLINE, January 11, 2023 follows suit with a pertinent argument: « companies that transform rapidly will be the champions of tomorrow ». In the same vein, also affirmed that the country’s economic growth forecasts will be on the up, with a growth rate of 7% in 2025 thanks to digital transformation.
